Sometimes it’s the small things that really make a difference. That can be true in accessorizing your office workstation. To provide the best ergonomics, organization and comfort, workstation accessories are the ticket to getting the job done. Office workstations are designed to accommodate certain types of accessories so it is always a good idea to see what the office workstation manufacturer has available. You are also more likely to complete the project if you order accessories at the same time as the furniture is ordered and typically you will qualify for a volume discount that is applied to the entire project. Workstation accessories can be divided into a few categories. Consider an ergonomic keyboard tray, an LCD monitor arm, a CPU holder and desktop accessories to accessorize your office workstation. Maxon has a complete assortment of workstation accessories to complement our office workstations.
The first workstation accessory to consider is an ergonomic keyboard tray since virtually all office workers spend most of their day working at the computer. The point at which your body touches the computer is the keyboard and the position of that tray relative to your body is critical for comfort and efficiency. Ergonomists suggest that your forearms should be parallel to the ground and your wrists should be straight when working on a keyboard. To do this effectively an ergonomic keyboard tray brings the keyboard to you at the correct height. Models vary considerably in cost and features. Typically a high quality adjustable keyboard tray moves in and out, up and down, swivels from side to side and even pivots to provide the perfect angle for the wrist. Sit-to-stand keyboard trays have enough vertical movement to allow the keyboard to rise above the desk so that it can be used in a standing position. Ergonomists also say that standing periodically through the day is beneficial. A padded surface in front of the keyboard aids in comfort. Don’t forget your mouse! You should be able to access it with minimal arm movement from the keyboard so the keyboard tray should be large enough to accommodate the mouse or have an accessory tray attached.
Although virtually all LCD monitors come with a stand, you might want to consider an LCD Monitor Arm to improve work effectiveness. Most monitor stands do not have any height adjustment and take up valuable desk space. A high quality LCD Monitor Arm will have a height adjustment and some are so easy to adjust that you can stand while working when used in conjunction with a sit-to-stand keyboard tray. The monitor arm will either attach to the worksurface or to the panel itself freeing up valuable worksurface space. A dual monitor arm will allow you to attach two LCD monitors and truly organize your world. When purchasing an LCD Monitor Arm be sure that it is designed for the size of monitor you are using. Most arms will have a weight rating that will tell you the capacity of the arm.
One of the most overlooked (and most beneficial) workstation accessories is a CPU holder. Like an LCD Monitor Arm, a CPU holder can free up valuable worksurface space and provide easy access for you or your IT department to make hardware changes. Two varieties of CPU holders are most common: underdesk and rolling cart. The underdesk CPU holder can be screwed to the bottom of worksurface or desk top to hold the computer off the ground. Many holders allow the user to slide out the computer and swivel it to access the cables on the back side. A more simple solution is a rolling cart that operates independently of the workstation itself, making installation simpler.
